So the Christmas makes have begun! Every year I have been making dolls for the girls but quite frankly after lasts years epic makes, I just couldn't face it - so this year I'm trying my hand at Scottie Dogs and hopefully owls as well. Honestly, how we find the time I don't know ladies?!!!! I'm quite happy with the results for my first effort, finally getting to use up some fabric and even some little jingle bells around the collars. The Union Jack one is for my eldest (11 going on 21) - and how much fun is going through your collection of buttons? Why did nobody tell me!? TTFN xxxxxx

So I recently visited Brighton on the south coast of England and accidentally ended up in a Cake shop. These were no normal cakes these were works of art!!!! I had never seen anything like it in my life. This was around Halloween, so there were a few spooky ones. I was inspired and went on to make a Bowling Cake for Lily's Bowling Party and a Castle for Poppy's Princess Party. I was chuffed to bits with my little effort - but nothing will ever compare to these.......... TTFN xxxxxxx

Mish Mash Post

Not sure what this post is about - just a few of my favourite things and bargains - which we all luuurvee..... I bought two of these blankets from Ebay - separate sellers - but exactly the same pattern and colours........v. strange? I saw 8 of these chairs at the side of the road near where I live, being sold for £12 - and it just so happened I needed new kitchen chairs - how could I not? I am very tempted to paint them - - would you? I love this old toy - because I love pinball and Rupert bear - did you have one of these - my daughter loves it. I love this - and it was only 20p from a carboot. It is an oil burner, you fill the 'roof' with water and oil and burn the candle below - I WISH I knew how old it was...1950s??? Finally, this was 10p at the carboot and it has a hook to hang it up, but I saw the same thing on Ebay the other day as a jigsaw - either way - I love it!!! TTFN Fleur xxxxx

This is a shelf my great grandfather made for me when I was little. It is currently in my tiny dressing room - a space which is completely and utterly mine, to fill with all the oddities I have collected since childhood.Not sure why, but since I was little, we have called these the lost boys.

This is a little trinket doll, I think from the 1950s.

These little elves have been with me since I was tiny.

This little scottie dog was my mums when she was little.

1950s Bridesmaid Dress

I have to share with you one of most favouritist things in the world. A bridesmaid's dress that my mum wore as a five year old in 1955. As a child I used to dress up in it all the time - I loved it so much - and was desperately sad when I grew out of it. Then in one of my mum's house moves it went missing for at least 20 years. Then a few weeks ago my mother paid me a visit and revealed she had found it and gifted it to me! It now hangs on my bedroom wall . It is so beautiful, to me anyway, the faded blue, pink and ivory net - the ragged silk flowers, the ruffles - I felt like a fairy princess when I wore it and it still brings me joy every morning. I was so affected by the missing fairy bridesmaid dress, that last Christmas, I even made my daughters dolls, called Lulu Charm Dolls (I should do a separate post) - in honour of it. Here are a couple of Lulu Charm Dolls with Blue Cat that I made for Poppy. They are called Lulu Charms because each dress had lots and lots of tiny charms sewn onto the net, little good luck tokens, shiny, pretty things that little girls love! But now, I have the real thing back! Hoorah!

Vintage Talcum Powder

At least I think they are? I picked up these pretties at a car boot on Sunday - unused and unopened. Obviously had to have them - especially having my beautiful new bathroom (see last post). One is Avon and the other is Elizabeth Arden. I wonder how old they are, if indeed they are old? Regardless, I love the colours and design! TTFN

A Very Vintage Royal Wedding Party

Of course I had to go Vintage! I don't know why but it all went a bit 1940s! We all had such a wonderful time - we cried - we laughed - we shrieked - and we ATE!!! Everybody brought food along - and what a feast! We drank Pimms and started the morning with a traditional British Fry- Up, followed later by a very English Tea Party! All my vintage Royal collection was used to full effect - well - if not on a Royal Wedding, when?Before the food arrived........

Toy Treasure Trove

A while back the girls and I paid a visit to our local historic town of Arundel. It was utterly glorious, a gazillion antique shops and we especially enjoyed visiting the Cathedral.

However the highlight for the girl (alright and me) was fabulous little vintage toy shop. It seemed to have every toy imaginable and ofcourse we would have happily taken everything.

It's such a delight to go into one of these privately owned shops where the shop keeper has bought everything herself and takes pride in it all - a story behind everything. It was a proper treasure trove! Can you spot the shop keeper? TTFN xxxxxx

Wedding of 71

In 1971 Bianca and Mick got married - but so did my parents. Recently, my mum was having a sort through her Mum's old things - and came across a piece of perfectly preserved and folded wrapping paper. She realised that it was the wrapping paper that her Mum had used for her wedding present back in '71. So she has given it to me - I just love the colours and images - I think I will put it in a frame -it deserves it after surviving this long - shame the marriage didn't.

Ladybird Collection Obsession!

My collection increases and expands nicely thank you. But I had a "moment" we all dream of at a car boot recently. A dear lady was selling off her daughter's collection (now grown up and was there - so I don't feel too bad). She had a box full - every one perfect condition - even with a plastic dust cover. She had about 40 - -from the Fairy Tale to the Religious to the older 1940s ones.

I dared to ask how much one was.........10p - 10p - yes I will say it again......10p!!!!! So of course I took the lot!!!! I have two of many - I have 3 Cinderellas (this will only make you squeal if you 'get it') I recently found a Ladybird Catalogue from the early 80s - such a sign of the times - including a Princess Diana book and one to mark the Pope's visit (yes I have those too!) But where to put them? I need an entire bookshelf - but lack the space. So for now they are stacked up against a little in-house window on our staircase. The children select one every night for their bedtime story - and it makes me happy every time I pass them. Small pleasures hey? Is there one Ladybird Book you would really like to see - because I am more than happy to do a blog post on one - any excuse to pour over those lovely illustrations!

So, my lovely Mum gave me this book, with things that I may seemingly like to make (!). I can lend it to you if you like ? (Actually the baby blanket is really stunning) - but really...... what is that rabbit doing to that dog?

Firstly the WIG STAND???!!!!! Nothing about this is right - is it? Seriously? What is going on? And what's with the eyelashes? Are they to make it that bit more glamorous? It's like some psychedelic Dr. Who Monster? If you found this in your girlfriend's bedroom - wouldn't you just run to the door? Love the type face don't you - sooooo 70s!!! It's a bit Blue Peter -not sure I'll be making the loo roll lamps - - times are hard - but not that hard!

Hassocks, Stocks, Lepers & Frescoes

We live in a little village in West Sussex, South England. In our village is a beautiful, old Church dating back to the 10th Century - it is always open and very well cared for and loved. Most striking are the hassocks, the kneelers, which the women of the Parish make for the pews. Each one is lovingly created using needle-point, each with its own significance or sentiment. There is no shortage! Here are just a few....... There are also the most incredible medieval frescoes, the colours still vibrant and incredibly well preserved. Below is a Leper's Squint . I had never seen one of these before. Lepers had to stand outside the Church away from the congregation, so to allow them a view of the Priest during Mass. The Parish created a viewing hole via the outside wall, then an interior hole - angled perfectly for the lepers to see through. Interesting isn't it? Outside is the original 16th Century Village Stock. I wonder who got put in those? Or what was thrown at them? In fact, one of the present villagers revealed to me that it was his ancestor that actually built them!!! I feel so privileged to have this on my doorstep and to live in a country where this is so readily available and accessable - and FREE TO ALL !!!!! Crochet Love

I'm back! A gazillion posts to do - so let's get started! Firstly crochet - and as Spring is upon us I made a Springtime Wreath (pattern available at the lovely Attic 24 ). It was very easy to follow the pattern I have to say and I still consider myself a beginner, not bad for an afternoon's work (obviously not work at all)My mum gave me a little vintage crochet book and a new one for my birthday and there are quite a few things I would love to make from each -crocheting tastes haven't changed so much since the 1960s have they!? I am also making two blankets, one I started last year in time for Christmas (HA!) - maybe this year's hey? I dip into it from time to time, but we are not in a serious relationship and enter each others lives on a random basis. The other is far more committed and for another post - lots of sunshine squares - its going to be amazing - I hope? More posts to come. I hope you haven't forgotten about me ? I still love all your blogs and as usual they keep me smiling!

Marble Rose Homemade Christmas

It's a homemade Christmas over at Marble Rose-dom. Lack of money is a driving force - but I still think receiving a gift someone has poured effort and love into, is worth its weight in gold, even if it is a little skeewiff or lopsided.

I haven't made a Betsy Doll for nearly three years -but I had promised my niece - and myself that she wouldn't be left out! I posted Betsy today, so I hope the Royal Mail treats her well.

Then I made luxury flannels for the ladies in my life - (mum and sis in laws) - I always despair at the kids using my flannels for "washing' their dolls - or whatever else they care to wipe it on - so making a flannel that absolutely shouts "VERY SPECIAL MUMMY FLANNEL" - may just act as a small deterrent to other small hands? (hmm or the complete opposite?) These flannels are BIG - I mean nice-big-close your eyes - cover your face in warm water and sigh - BIG. Trimmed with cute material and lace, I placed them in some baskets and added some special bubble bath and obligatory chocs. What better way to wake yourself up in the morning eh? And finally my crochet - yes those years of knotting, tears and sore fingers paid off. I've made the girls some hats and my sis-in-law a snood thing with her fav colour wool - and a small wee Panda Bear for my eldest - (crocheting in that black wool was like crocheting with eyelashes!) So that's it for now. I did my best and offer it with love. Home-made Christmas indeed. Can't wait to show you the Lulu Charm Dolls I've made for the girls and tell you about the Children's book I've written " Adventures with Mrs. Rolipop" , endorsed by Boden. (Free Clothes!) Squeal! I was so happy - giddy in fact about winning this giveaway from The Ramblings of an Everyday Mummy. All the bits were everything I LOVE.

There was even some yummy chocolate thrown in there - of course it lasted seconds. A handmade brooch made by Beki. Ribbon & a really great smelling candle, also CK hankies. Give me a cold now! And a book - can't wait to indulge. And my favourite - BEAUTIFUL bunting, again made by Beki. It is so so pretty - and I have been meaning to do some myself - but time just hasn't allowed - I was going to put it in the kitchen, but I think I will put it up in my bedroom as a reminder each morning that random acts of kindness are still bestowed, that there are like minded, clever, kind people out there in the world - and a reminder to GET UP OUT OF BED AND MAKE THE MOST OF MY DAY IN THIS GOOD WORLD!!!!

Just thought I'd share my latest fondness and fortune. Lavender....... Lavender milk. Just warm milk with a spoon full of lavender sugar. Very yummy and as lavender is a sedative, great to make you sleepy (or the kids). Also, Lavender & Lemon jam - bought from a local lady. It is so yummy, this small jar lasted a morning! A Lost Corner

Dust anyone - help yourself......

Any suggestions on what to do here? It's where my little Catholic remnants rest, well some of them. The Collection Box is at some point going to be put in our Bathroom, for people to "donate" a penny, rather than "spend" one. The bureau is great and more so because the grammar school my brother teaches at were throwing them away. So I took 2 - I would have taken more if space allowed. My question is - would you paint this bureau white?

Bits from my Kitchen

A bit random really and I could have done a post about each piece, but you know what it's like...so I thought I would do a collective post.

Firstly a 1960s measurement converter. I love this, it was pence at a CB and it really helps me convert when baking old recipes. It needs to be put up on the wall - another job another time.

A newie! Bought recently from Poundland, lovely blackboard, somebody's trying their luck! More newies! The tins were 50p each!!! And who could resist the mugs for £1....sometimes the new fits nicely with the old doesn't it? OK, so lots of this is new stuff actually. The board is magnetic, but used mostly for my keys (check out one of the only CK things I own!) Pin-board! Not that you can see the board for bills and party invites - children's unfortunately. And now a favourite. I paid quite a bit for this on Ebay and I really need to get it up on the wall. Not sure of the age, but it is a clothes line! The rope pulls from the front and when you're finished you reel it in. It came with lots of dear little pegs. I do wonder what age this is? Finally, my mother-in-law gave me this floor sweeper, I believe it was her great aunts, so lets just say, it's early 1900s. And......most importantly it works!

I love my china, so I wanted to show you what I have on my kitchen shelf at the moment. All of my china sets are carboot finds, although the top shelf was a pressie from my Mummy. My most recent purchase is the polka dot set - I think they are 1950s? £3 for the set - not bad eh? What do you think of the old 1950s shopping basket - really cute lining isn't it. What is it when it's not wicker, but that kind of plastic stuff ?

Finally because I am dotty about spotty - my new pair of wellies. Funny how a pair of wellies can make doing the dirtiest of jobs, that little bit less mundane. How you are enjoying your weekends? !!! TTFN xxxxxx

It just got SO much Better!

Eeek. I am so excited about sharing this with you. You just can't look at the pictures on this one you have to read on.... So here are the copious amounts of patchwork hexagons I was given by my Grandpa. There are so many, they go on and on.....I'm thinking OCD.....oh dear it's in my genes. So many different types of fabric. And wouldn't you believe it - my favourites, a tiny rose pattern, the kind I would have chosen myself, he HASN'T made up! How inconsiderate!

There was also some old fabric - which I am sure I can find uses for. But here's the thing. There were also hundreds of cardboard hexagons ready to wrap. I began to realise they had been made from old greetings cards (obviously a big on recycling)(or really skint). Lots of Christmas Cards. So I started looking through them all - and out of all the hundreds there were - there was just one that had a name on it. And it was mine. My mother's handwriting and my tiny scrawls. I must have been about 2 years old.

It doesn't get Better than this!

OK - so how wild, colourful, crazy is this gigantic patchwork cover? And even crazier is that my Great Grandfather did it back in the 1960s. Clearly in touch with his (I won't say feminine side) "creative" side, Harry Jones, from Wales, was in his younger days a miner, but was prolific with his needlework to say the least. It's currently on my daughters bed and she loves it.

Recently I was given by my grandfather a bag with hundreds and hundreds of fabric hexagons, all made up with old 1950's material, waiting to be sewn together. Now this was indeed fate, as I had toyed with the idea of making a patchwork cushion or quilt for sometime, but had been put off by the idea of making all the patches. Problem solved. My dear great-grandfather (RIP) has done it for me - so now I get to finish something he started nearly 60 years ago. It doesn't get much better than that.

I will post some pics of the hexagons in next post - you'll love them!!!

Poor Abandoned Dollies.

Firstly, I know nothing about dollies, so excuse my ignorance - and please set me straight! Now I don't collect dolls - well I didn't - but when I found all these at the bottom of a car boot box, I thought perhaps I would buy one and give it to my youngest daughter. The seller however wanted £2 - so off I went to think about it. On return sometime later, the woman begged me to take the lot for £2. So of course I did. Aren't they a sorry sight? They need a good wash to start with - poor grubby faces. And those dresses? I don't think they were bought like this - it seems like someone has painstakingly made these dear outfits? And how old are these dolls? Oh please help me? Are they Barbie's...or Sindys. They deserve to have a name, don't you think? Most importantly though, my three girls love them and marvel at the beautiful, if not a bit dirty dresses. Finally these pretty (and not so pretty...see above) ladies are being played with again - and isn't that what all dollies want? TTFN

Dinner Plates

Welcome to my Kitchen Cupboards, where there is no sense of order whatsoever.

I painted the one on the right after rescuing it from a skip

Thing is, I just got bored of the Denby dinner service we got for our Wedding, like so many other couples. So I packed it all away and decided to use vintage plates that looked pretty or unusual for dinner. I have so many - hardly any of them match - they all cost about 10p at carboots - but I love them (especially the cherry one.....ooh and the star one) They're a talking point - and sometimes a useful distraction from the food I serve up!

Noah's Ark Birthday Party

So these days who can afford a lavish, costly children's birthday party? Not I. So one has to be fairly creative - a little thought, a bit of preparation, a close eye on budget and a wonderful party can be had - children don't care as long as it is fun!!!!! So Lily chose Noah's Ark as her theme. All the children either dressed as their favourite animal or brought their own cuddly animal. We put our tent up and that was our Ark. I made sure the party bags were fun and special. All guests were girls so I bought a lot of pink bags from Ebay and decorated them myself, with some vintage style goodies and a few Ark animal masks and a Maze activity sheet printed free from the web. And Mummy even made, to the best standard she was able to, the Noah's Ark birthday cake!And of course we had to have a Noah conducting ceremonies.

Bargain Pretties.

I know it's deemed crass to revel in the cheapness of a thrifty buy from Carboot Heaven, but sometimes the pleasure of a great deal is too much not to share. Isn't part of the fun to find pretties that you love and realise you are getting them for pittence? Well it is to me- when someone is selling lovelies for pennies, I feel as though I am rescuing them from a life of dark cupboards and forgotten drawers AND I'm not cursing at the expense of it all. I so much prefer other people's junk to 'shop-new' - don't you? So, in this post I am sharing my good fortune with you - whether it's crude or not!

BARGAIN 1- Vintage Christmas Decs - 20p each - I think they may be 1950's Japanese? I have seen them on American Blogs, but not UK - so I snapped them up super quick from a woman that was selling lots of coloured crochet needles. BARGAIN 2 - Crochet Hangers - £1 for 30!!!!!!!! - OK so they are not the gorgeous cotton kind - they are this kind of nylon type ribbon material - but does the job. When I reached into the bin bag of all these hangers I asked how much one was and she said a pound - which I winced at (yes cheap-skate I am) - but she meant for the lot! BARGAIN 3 - 1950's Cocktail Mats - £1 for 6 - Anyone for a Babysham? Not sure why I bought these - should be a talking point at my next party? BARGAIN 4, 5 &6 - Vintage Fans - 10p EACH! - They are so pretty, all hand painted and really well preserved. I wish I could pin point an age on them? I just love the thought of women once treasuring these and fluttering them in front of their delicate complexions. With the sunny weather I am determined to use one - and why not? Which is your favourite? So pretty aren't they? Anyhoo lovely people - have a delicious weekend.

When Diana Knew it was Too Late.

It's great how you can make a simple Tea-Towel a talking point if you buy thrifty! I love vintage tea-towels, they encompass so much of the era from whence they came and we use them so much. Well I do unfortunately. This is my favourite.... As a child in the UK, in 1981 - I was beside myself with excitement at the prospect of a Fairytale Wedding. I scoured the papers and magazines to fill my beloved scrapbook my Grandmother gave to me. As the story goes, Diana knew shortly before her Wedding Day that her husband-to-be was not in love with her and had serious doubts about whether to go ahead with the wedding. And so in answer to her fears, Charles, her brother, delivered the legendary line.....

"Well, it's too late now, your face is on the tea-towels."

So when I found this tea-towel, unused, still in its packaging, on the dusty shelves of a Charity Shop - it resonated well, that this emblem of Diana's fate and destiny should survive all these years later, whilst she would not. A cruel fate too that such a pretty face should end up drying dishes (I mean Diana, not me) TTFN xxxx

My Bagpuss Girls

If you don't know about Bagpuss this is him.... He was a "saggy, old, cloth cat.....but Emily loved him" It was my favourite TV show when I was a little girl in the 1970s. Emily used to find a 'thing' and leave it at the shop (that didn't sell anything) and when Bagpuss woke up all his friends woke up and together with the help of a Marvelous Magnificent Mouse Organ, a few ballads and Bagpuss magic - the 'thing' would be mended and go into the shop window for all to see. Now apart from the fact that I think my love of thrifting started because of this show, I also envied Emily and her beautiful hair and her seemingly idyllic life. So, in tribute to Emily, I took some snaps of my girls, to remind me of the wonders of childhood and to look upon with a great big, contented Bagpuss sigh. TTFN xxxx

I'm not sure how I did it - well with a lot of help from my SIL and books actually. I started a small square and it seemed to go relatively well - so I just kept on going.....and going.....and going. The sides frill up - and I am sure this is not right - perhaps I should have counted stitches, or added some, or something....... I even managed to create a stitch (which I'm sure must have a name) all on my own!!! So, even though it is riddled with errors, it is full of love and hopefully by Christmas I shall having something to snuggle up under with the girls. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW PROUD I FEEL! I have finally created something using the power of crochet - I love it - I can't put it down, I love finding a moment to escape and lose myself in it. I fully intend to be brilliant at it and fill my house with pretties. TTFN

Rocking Crazy Duck.

This is a little toy I picked up a while ago - but it sort of sums up the state I'm in at the moment.(see Appletree Cottage Blog) The duck floats in your bath whilst you wave the magnetic wand to make it go a bit crazy...I think that is the idea??? Although the duck is looking at that wand as though it is a hammer ready to bludgeon it doesn't it?

I do feel as though someone somewhere has cast their magic wand over me, giving me the life I always dreamed of having - although I am also like the duck, with no sense of direction and at the mercy of the wand. TTFN Fleur xxxxx

The Magic of Childhood

It's amazing the lengths I will go to recapture the magic of my childhood. All the picture books I poured over as a child have been lost, so when I see one at a CS, CB or Ebay and leap at it, like it belongs to me (perhaps it did?) So when I saw this one on Ebay in America, I had to have it. It was a small book, just right for little hands. Oh and look it's Educationally Sound too. I remember tracing the yellow ribbon over and over with my finger across the page. I remember wishing a lamb would follow me to school. Or at least having something love me so much that it couldn't bear to be without me. I remember wishing I went to a school like Mary's and having a dress like hers. But I don't remember this last verse at all. Do you?

I have started a new blog - a diary of my newest adventure.....buying and renovating our new house.....Appletree Cottage. Snow House

When I was little my Grandma made a Snow House - to us it was the most magical thing ever. On Boxing Day we were allowed to put our little hands inside, reach in and retrieve a little present. It made the end of Christmas, just that little bit easier! Over the years it disintegrated and so this week I made one exactly the same.....but with a little extra. In the roof is a magic window - if you find it and look in you will see by the light from the chimney a little, glittery Nativity Scene. Wish I could show you, but only those who find the Magic Window get to see the Christmas Family.

On the 11th hour of the 11 day of the 11th month the WW 1 ended. At this time I always light my candle in its trench art candle stick. The picture unfortunately doesn't show the roses delicately engraved into the shell.

For a few minutes I sit and watch the candle and imagine the soldier in the trench as he created something beautiful from something ugly - and in those moments my heart and soul are lifted. This soldier gave me a gift, a reminder that even faced with death, faced with terror and bloodshed, he created something of beauty. Perhaps it was for a loved one back home that he was never able to gift personally, perhaps it was something to do that helped him escape the horror surrounding him? Whatever its purpose, it is reminder to me that when all we have at our disposal is something bad, we seek to change it, to morph it into something good - and that's the human spirit at its best.

Cupcake Disaster, Chocolate Balls Success.

Second batch of cupcakes.

So the first batch of my cupcakes went into the oven but did not come back out, they kind of.......blew up. Don't ask, I didn't. So what to do with a great deal of random sponge? Birthday party in a few hours........what the heck, make some ball type things....cover them with chocolate and sprinkles......it'll be fine...ahem. And Voila......chocolate ball flower cake things......they looked alright, but were a little bit sweet. But look, I finally found something to with those flipping 50's cocktail sticks! (Do you like the vintage wax paper?)

Jughead and Embroidery

I bought this lovely embroidery at a carboot for pennies and the lady that sold it to me suggested I finish it. HAHAHAHAHAHAH....was my reaction - and yet, it niggled me that I didn't even try. So I did try and it wasn't too disastrous and I actually enjoyed it! It is not as intricate as the established flowers, but I had to use what I had and that didn't include fine silk thread. So now that is finished what should I do with it? Suggestions? Finally - on a completely different note - has anyone ever seen a jug like this - I have tried so hard to find something similar online but failed terribly! Help me if you can - you lot are oh so clever! He's kin of creepy isn't he?

Christmas Pressies for my Girls - Cats

I thought each week I would reveal one of my little, humble makes for one of my children's Christmas pressies. This means, obviously they're no longer allowed to see Mummy's blog! So, here's a couple of little cats - my first attempt at a stuffed animal - and it was so fun - I could make a whole litter. It was wonderful to go through all my buttons with an actual reason! Then finally use some of the baby dresses I have been saving. The girls will love these, as they love cats, were very fond of these dresses and have a big thing for small cuddly toys - but since I have banned the purchase of any more (I'm talking McDonald Degenerates)- these should be a real treat at Christmas! Don't they have funny little faces? The above was a stickler - it was stretchy material - I had to use tissue paper between fabric to get it sewed up. Very tricky - well for me! Hope you are all well. I am going to a party on Thursday and guess who will be there.......only George Swooney Clooney. Yum!

Anybody know anything about 'Mary Rose Young'? I picked this up at a Charity Shop quite a while back because I instantly fell in love with it. I had forgotten about it until I popped into my garage (remember that scary place?) and retrieved it. It's a bit dirty and slightly chipped, so am going to clean it up today. I wish I knew how old it was? It's so pretty and colourful, it really cheers me up and I adore things that are both beautiful and functional also. I mean erasers of course! I recently decided for no apparent reason to purchase somebody's 1980's collection of said erasers on Ebay. Actually there was only a few that interested me, nostalgically - and those were the Rose, The Joker and the Ariel packet . But when they arrived in the post I can't tell you and am also slightly embarrassed to admit that I had such fun going through them all - each one lovingly wrapped in tissue paper. My husband and I laughed like school kids as each appeared to comments like, "Ooh I wanted that one....ooh I think I had that....oh yeah everyone had that one.....hmm that one always smudged...ooohh smell it smell it!'I was amazed that I remembered so many - who knew!? Do you recognise any? Or was it me that just made alot of mistakes? (and still does)

Thai Festival

So it started well, lapping up the Fruit Sculptures (see below post) and admiring shrines and religious icons. Then we drifted into the food section, which smelled great and looked fantastic!!!! However, naughtily, I think I spent too much of my time in the Hello Kitty stall!!! (tee!) There was also some great handmade 'monster' stuff - which I didn't buy - but drew (nicked) loads of ideas from. The following day I popped into Primark, picked up a few cheap tea shirts and plan to make some monster T-Shirts for Christmas. These were fab. Beans (or pulses, or...something?) that have various words on them, so when you plant them and they sprout, the new beans display your chosen word -HOW DOES THAT WORK!!!??? We also made some traditional Thai thingies - Although it didn't see so magical when it caught fire in the paddling pool and the rubber duck began to melt. TTFN xxxxxx

Clever Fruit and Veg

We recently went to a Thai Festival here in Surrey and although I spent much of my time eating lovely Thai food and browsing the stalls (next post!!!) I did manage to stop and smell the roses - well - look at some vegetables - but wow - they were real show stoppers!!! How clever is this chap? I had a really wonderful chat with him - he explained how he now creates many centre pieces for weddings! This lady was just amazing. Imagine doing this with a melon? Or this for Halloween! School Gift for Big School Girl

Three examples for you. Exhibit A) Nice box........not (imho) very, pretty candle holders. Exhibit B) Pretty packaging for some festive, 1970's soaps, but sadly were a bit stinky. Exhibit C) ........ I loved the box, but I should never...... ever.... have opened it. Because it was cleverly deceptive, like Pandora's Package - once these little daggery, delights got out, they never went back in - and they are EVERYWHERE!!!! What am I going to do with them all? There's only one thing for it - Cocktails Ladies?

Well the Holidays come to an end here today and tomorrow all three of my darlings go back to school, my youngest for the first time. So I really need to come up with a game plan - get some sort of career back on track maybe? It's hugely tempting to play house and get some tidying done and shopping and ironing and making and..........but - with a pending, gigantic, mortgage on the horizon, I think I have to firmly bite 'paid work' bullet. Apart from all that - more importantly, I am going to miss my little girls, terribly, actually and the quietness I so often prayed for these last 7 weeks, may become a deafening reminder that I am all alone.

These are a little bit before my time - musical greetings cards - but they are so cute. A little worse for wear, there is a special knack to getting the mechanisms going now, but once they start they sound great!! The Christmas Card plays Jingle Bells And the Birthday Card plays Happy Birthday - what else? I think they must be 1950s? I wish they still made them, I much prefer them to the digital ones don't you? Oh dear, just listening to Jingle Bells makes me feel festive!!!!

Fantasy Farming

How cute are the illustrations in this book?!!! I bought 4 adorable books for 99p on ebay - I felt guilty at the price, but gave super nice feedback! My children are going through a "can we have a dog, goat, chicken, rabbit, donkey, elephant?" stage. This hasn't been helped by the fact that we have just had an offer accepted (long way to go yet) on a cottage that has donkey stables and a field. This prospect has sent them into meltdown and they are already naming their ponies. The idea is complete fantasy, but I have to admit, I look at these pictures and get quite tempted myself! (then I remember the no money aspect and remind myself that with animals comes animal ****)

1950's Glamour vs 2009 Neurosis

One of my latest fascinations is the 1950's, I'm not sure why - maybe because I am attracted to the portrayal of women seemingly more in control of their lives than I am now - women that took pride in motherhood alone and their self worth didn't seem compromised by lack of career. Maybe? Whilst going to college, university and striving to be at the top of my field, I still always placed my dream to be a mother and provide my future children with a beautiful home paramount, it was just something way more important to me than promotions and my own office (although it was good when I had them). Now, three children on I do enjoy 'paid work' -when I get it - but I have also allowed myself to feel successful in having raised children and run a home with equal self congratulation and smugness. Don't get me wrong - I owe a debt to the 1950 generation of strong women who strove for equality in the workplace, post war women whose strength I have huge admiration for. We should have that right to chose, to be given the same opportunities as a man. I know this. But choice may have melted my brain and exhausted my body - because now I feel women's credibility may be marked by her place in the workforce and her likability (for want of a better word) reflected by her domestic/maternal status. Choice may have equaled a division and a conflict, in ourselves and between each other. However I feel, actually, women are on the verge of a renaissance - times are a changing (that's maybe another post?)

Wow - what a blumin awful babble!!!! Don't usually do that!!! SORRY!!! I think what I'm trying to say (terribly) is - I often wish I was born in a time when women's' ambition didn't fuel insecurities or play host to a mountain of guilt. (OMGOODNESS what a thing to admit!!!!) And these magazines just seem to illustrate a time when women 'knew their place and were bloody happy with it!' The images seem to portray women who didn't live in frustration by their lack of professional achievement (like me) didn't feel embarrassed to smile like a Cheshire Cat at a new washing machine (like me) get excited over a new vacuum (like me) or even (wait for it) occasionally slap on a bit of lip gloss and a pointy bra before the hubby came home (OK well not me). BUT..... hey - we all know these women's magazines don't always tell the complete truth don't we? And I'm certain behind those killer breasts and red hot lips these were women as neurotic and mentally unstable as me :))))

Who cares? Let's just enjoy the pictures!!!!!! I was thinking about making a few posters out of these images!!!! TTFN xxxx

So with bloggy excitement I'd like to present to you my latest creations.....

MARBLE ROSE MEMO BOARDS

Babies have busy schedules too you know! All those parties and doctors appointments. Surely they deserve a pin board all to themselves!!!! Some have writing on - some have been left blank. Each one has little pink and blue nappy pins and cute nursery echelons. There's white, pink, yellow, baby blue and eggshell. Saying that, why should the children get all that cuteness? What do you think? I have experimented with all kinds of colours - and there has been ALOT of trial and error (cork cutting, decal making, varnishing!) . Why does something so simple take so long to get right? Anyhoo - suggestions would as always be very much appreciated. I have been making many things to go into the Marble Rose shop - I am going to bring the prices down - so people can maybe purchase the pencil cases for Christmas - YES -I said the C word!!!!

WIZARD OF OZ PARTY!!!

Our Wizard of Oz party was what you might call a 'homemade' affair. Grandma made the costumes - Rosie was the Lion and Lily the Tinman! The Lion's mane was an epic creation, as Grandma spent many an hour looping and threading wool onto elastic. We did have a Dorothy too, but she got stage fright at the 11th hour - and generally I was a bit of a grumpy Witch that morning for various reasons, so I didn't need a costume.

In the morning we watched the DVD and ate yummy popcorn.....

We made a yellow brick road lined with Munchkin Land plastic flowers (1950s cocktail sticks!). We made a Wizard of Oz garland to hang in the living room..... With scary Flying Monkeys...... Munchkins..... And the Wicked Witch.... Then we set the table - ready for........

Edible red glitter! (to represent the Ruby Slippers) And edible Wizard of oZ toppers too!The kids had great fun making them - but more fun making them magically disappear! We hope you enjoyed yourself at your Oz Party if you took part - if not, we hope you enjoyed a glimpse of ours.

Issues with Humpty.

I have a gazillion old children's books and just love to pour over them, I get such inspiration from them. HOWEVER sometimes I find an image that just spooks me out - like this Humpty.... It's something to do with the size of his head in proportion to his body - it's just.....wrong. I'm glad he fell off and never got put back together - I hope he was pushed actually. And this Moonman - he seems just too pointy -on reflection his face isn't bad - kind of sweet, old mannish - but again it's the head size - disproportionate I say! HOWEVER I absolutely love these two. Presently I think most people associate Tweedle Dee & Dum with Alice in Wonderland - but they existed long before Mr. Carol incorporated them into his stories. Personally I think this pair are far prettier than the Disney depiction - don't you?

Lazy Saturday Makes.

I took an old bed tray that I bought at CB for £1 and used one of my trusty vintage decals to make this..... Then took a plain cream bucket and used a decal on that too! But I don't know what to do with all my vintage lace Do you like the bowl? CB for £4 - I thought the blue detailing was very pretty, ofcourse it would have once had the jug too, I seem to have alot of these bowls minus the pitcher.

Any suggestions for these? Seriously?

5 small patches with little hens on - great ! But to what use? Fringing and edging (£2 each at CB) And some lovely material (lots of it) - it looks a bit vile here but it's actually very pretty. I value your input my bloggy friends! TTFN xxxxx

Herby Bath Bombs...

Update: It's all embarrassingly simple - no measuring - just mix and see - note of warning though - I'm not sure how long these will last if you mix with water. If you made them dry (don't add water) then you could give as gifts. My youngest has chicken pox - and she is suffering terribly. My niece had it a while back and my SIL did a wonderful post on her blog Reap What You Grow on how to make Lavender Bath Bombs to create a soothing bath - we went further and chucked anything else from the herb garden.

We chopped the herbs......

We mixed with oats and a drop of water....

We got messy....

And we made lots and lots of very pretty BATH BOMBS.

The oats are supposed to calm the itchiness and I suppose the lavender acts as an antiseptic and will help sedate her before bed! As for all the other herbs we used - I'll let you know what they do! TTFN xxx

Beamish - Part III - An English Woman's home is her.....?

In English Medieval Times, when court would dine, they used to place the lowly classes below the salt and the courtiers above it along the banquet table (salt being the expensive commodity it was). The class system hasn't really ended in the UK, although it's not as blatant - certainly not in Beamish 1920's. Here are two homes, the home of a solicitor and the home of a Miner - can you guess which is which?

House number 2 & 3. Who lives in houses like these? (bear in mind their beds are in the living room/dining room.) ...and the toilet outside..... I really like the green house though - think they may have run out of glass? Looks Great! Both house holds to me were astonishingly beautiful but my ancestors were miners so I know which side of the salt I sit on. TTFN xxxx

Beamish - Part II - Let's Shop!!!

So, off we tread down the high street in Beamish Town 1918 ish. Firstly, let's pop into the hardware shop. You can't hear her (or see her particularly well as these are phone pics -sorry) - but the shop assistant is asking us if we would like our knives sharpened? Reminding us that stainless steel has not yet been invented and a regularly visit to the knife sharpener is highly advisable. Thanks Miss - but we're off to the more popular and crowded......Sweet Shop! It's complete mayhem in here - let's pop across the road to the Grocers! Now off we go, briefly, as my eyes are watering from excitement (blurry pics sorry - grrrrr) - to the Haberdashery..... I need to pop into the Printers & Stationers to buy a few bit & bobs...... An Exercise Book....... A few little cards...... And ephemera of all sorts.... But my favourite.....A License to have my own male servant. Did you get one too - excellent! Tram home....back to my house for tea and scones.... you will see the inside of my Beamish Terrace House! That's Part III.

Deck the Chair

So finally I grabbed from my garage (eek) one of the old deck chairs and decided to re vamp it a little. I bought 2 vintage bed spreads from CS ages ago and always intended to use them for something.So I took old scary, spider ridden deck chair. Stripped it. Painted it with left over red and after a bit of sewing and a small struggle with a few upholstery nails. VOILA! Add one child and a cat and SOME SUN! And we have the perfect Monday afternoon.

Beamish - Part One

Welcome to the wonderful world of Beamish Open Air Museum in County Durham, England. Acres of land preserved and maintained to reflect all aspects of life in the early 20th Century. Beamish was originally a small coal mining village, so living conditions were hard - but OH SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I took so many pictures that sunny day I was in 7th Heaven - everything was pure eye candy - so I have decided to do a few posts - this one is called.....

HOW SCHOOL SHOULD BE!!!!

My girls had so much fun in the old classroom, writing on the old slate boards and sitting at the lovely school desks. The teacher was very composed and quite strict - always staying in character. Watching my three girls was like watching The Little House on the Prairie! The playground - and a few hoops to practice with - they were metal and the noise was excruciating! So beautiful - how I wish my children could go to a little village school, in the 1920's, on a sunny day. Next post........we go shopping . Wait until you see the Haberdashery!!!

My youngest left nursery school (sniff), from the same place my other daughters went to, so I made something special for the lady, Elaine, who runs it. She had ordered 10 of my pencil cases for the little leavers and expressed an interest in one of the larger boxes to keep her pictures in - so of course I had to surprise her - and here it is for you to see! I am going to add it to the Marble Rose Shop once I have rejigged the prices (cheaper!) and added more stock. What do you think??? I have figured out a way to make my own decals for lettering - I hated using stamps and decals can get expensive - my way I can print what I like in most colours and type faces - although it's a bit fiddly it's much cheaper! This is more of a tribute to the Two Crazy Crafters, whose Blog I think is lovely. I was in a CS recently and bought this adorable knitting pattern for 9p - makes a change to buy something vintage for cheaper than its original price! Firstly I should point out I can't knit - well ok a scarf, but that's it - so I really did buy this for the pictures. It was relevant when I bought it because it includes the recently passed Farrah Fawcett doll. It says it includes Barbie - but none of them look like Barbie - just Sindy - Philistine I hear you cry!!! The woolens are just so.............woolly.

Anyway - this is for you girls - enjoy!

Mothering by Numbers.

So, one more day and the kiddies are on holiday and am I ready? Actually mentally no - but I have stocked up on crafty, making stuff for those inevitable rainy days so practically speaking....ish. (It's like waiting for an invasion) Sometime ago I went to a car boot and found a box of vintage colouring books and bought them all for £2. Not one had been used and of course I'm sorely tempted to keep it that way - however once they are coloured in I think I will write a little passage in the front of each girls book and keep them as a 2009 holiday mementos. I have been so organised that I have even bought via Ebay a 'Holiday Craft Cupboard' which is getting delivered tonight - I will post pics soon! Having so many of these bits & bobs - I am thinking of having a GIANT GIVE AWAY!!!! If.....if.....I can reach 100 Followers by my 100th Post (eek) - to do that though I think I will offer a little incentive. Ooohh the suspense!!
