Jughead and Embroidery

I bought this lovely embroidery at a carboot for pennies and the lady that sold it to me suggested I finish it. HAHAHAHAHAHAH....was my reaction - and yet, it niggled me that I didn't even try. So I did try and it wasn't too disastrous and I actually enjoyed it! It is not as intricate as the established flowers, but I had to use what I had and that didn't include fine silk thread. So now that is finished what should I do with it? Suggestions? Finally - on a completely different note - has anyone ever seen a jug like this - I have tried so hard to find something similar online but failed terribly! Help me if you can - you lot are oh so clever! He's kin of creepy isn't he?

  1. Well done you! I don't think I would've been so brave to attempt it.

  3. Brilliant embroidery! Does the neat little edge run all the way round, or is it just on the bottom edge? I think your Jug is some kind of Toby Jug, but maybe one of the rather posh ones, as he's all one colour. I have some vague memory that they did characters from Shakespeare like that - could he be Feste the jester with that kind of hood? You might find out if I'm right or barking up the wrong tree if you Google some of my key words - best of luck!

  4. Aarg! How do you do it? Read this:

"Undecorated white jugs were produced by Doulton during World War II and its aftermath. The clay models have slight production flaws so it was not worth painting them for export. Instead they were glazed for limited distribution and are now considered very desirable.
Featured on page 417 of the new book A Century of Royal Doulton Character and Toby Jugs."

Of course it may not be the real thing, but you really do have an eye for the goodies!

  5. Floss you are just fab at finding these things out!!!! you should get a cut from now on!!! The woman that sold it to me at Carboot said it was Doulton and kept saying I got a real bargain (£1) - but I just couldn't find anything online, so just presumed she was blagging. This gives me great hope!!!

  7. Back again! I think he is a jester, but the only one pictured on the 'j' list isn't the same:

But there are several other jesters listed, without pictures, and I'm betting that he's one of them. So, does he have a serial number or anything like that?

  11. The embroidery is wonderful - perhaps you could inset it into some flowery fabric and make a cushion?
